Studio

Chad Griffin is a visual artist living and working in Manhattan. He maintains a studio on the Upper West Side focused on painting and monotype printing.

His work is driven by a fascination with ideas and the influence of visual imagery on our internal dialog. As he works, Griffin finds fresh realities through feedback between the emerging image and his creative intuition. For him creating a picture is a process of introspection, exploration, and revelation.

“This alchemy of transformation from an idea to the finished picture is a visible manifestation of the internal dialog. It is recorded thought.”

“My pictures begin with a vision that I bring to the canvas to explore. From this seed, the interplay of the developing image and my creative intuition drives the discovery of the final work. Figures, symbols, color, and the painted word are the main elements in these images.”

2020  ::  Century Series

Influenced by the spiritual color explorations of Mark Rothko, the metaphoric painting of Paul Klee and the pop art of Andy Warhol, this work is a powerful exploration of the duplicated icon and of the emotionality of color. Painted in acrylic, every painting begins with the stencil of a skull, the clichéd icon of mortality. Each is as unique as much as replica.

As a group this series addresses the dichotomy between the uniqueness of the individual amid the sameness of the species. Alone they are meditations on the conflict between the beauty of a life lived and its brevity.
